Some Thoughts

Photos

I use photography to make conventional and unusual images and portraits of what I see.  I often learn about those images as I work with them.  Sometimes in that process I find things I couldn't see when I made them.

Series of Work

My work is theme-based.  I am attracted to unusual Images, that start out having some associations with each other.  Then stories develop.

Stories

Stories evolve in time.  I invite you to explore the images in my photography and portrait work and develop your own relationships with them. New prints are released regularly. If you sign up for updates, you will get notified about new prints, books and shows.

Keep Up to Date!

What I'm Working On

Refuge

Straw Camera Portraits

Windows

image146

The isolation of the pandemic inspired me to respond to a call for entry to a show themed "Refuge".  I thought of this unusual piece, made it and submitted it to the show.

The Refuge Project had me looking at windows, looking out of windows. I found that the windows were the links to my imagination, where I take refuge. Outside is anything and everything imaginable.

In 2018 I learned about and built a straw camera using over 4000 straws.  The "camera" acts as a projector showing an image deconstructed to reveal previously unknown qualities of its subjects. This photography creates unusual portraits.

Straw Camera Portraits

Infrared Images made in Ireland of the magic that can be found there. Archival Photographic Paper or Pictorico Prints available. I have also made liquid emulsion prints from this series on wood and copper, which you can see in the Gallery.

Cars and Trucks

image150

In a gully on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State I discovered an unusual collection of old cars and trucks being reclaimed by nature.  I photographed them extensively as portraits over time to learn their secrets. Archival Paper Prints available. I have also made liquid emulsion prints from this series on wood and copper, which you can see below.

Cars and Trucks

image151

Driving around the Olympic Peninsula as a passenger in a car, I made images of things that caught my eye.  I discovered that I had a body of work, made digital negatives and contact printed images on poplar using liquid emulsion.  There are framed and unframed prints of these images.

Liquid Emulsion Prints on Razor Blades of the destruction I saw in New Orleans just after Hurricane Katrina in burnt tins with New Orleans dirt. I thought this was an acceptable way to show these images.

Pictorico (Clear Transparancy) Prints

The Windows Series was conceived to be printed on Pictorico (and sewn onto a wooden frame suspended over a bed of wool). Infrared Ireland Images also work nicely this way, especially "Tractor". Please be in touch to discuss if interested in this. I will provide Pictorico Prints alone if desired.
